Total Request Live

In October 2017 MTV relaunched Total Request Live, the premiere daily music and pop culture show, broadcast live from Times Square. I worked as a Producer and Editor, developed social-first ancillary franchises for the show, designed the square social media formats for all music performances and show clips, and was part of the VOD clipping team delivering to publishing teams.

While designing the square experience, my idea was to give TRL a distinct and eye-catching look that incorporated the on air show's GFX and set design. There were two main content types to consider; Music Performances and Show Segments. I wanted to distinguish this content from the typical meme format on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, but it's an undoubtably an effective format. Below are the design explorations, including two unused color profiles.

To further elevate the content, I created the transition you can see below. The text at the top has served its purpose in the first 10-20 seconds of a video, and animating off creates an immersive experience and allows for a full frame square viewing experience.
